Santa Parade History

Many cities world-wide host an annual Santa Parade or Christmas Pageant to celebrate the start of the festive and holiday season in their city.

The Christchurch Santa Parade was started by Sir James Hay in 1947 and after 69 years is still taking the Christmas spirit out into the streets of Christchurch.

The first parade consisted of a few hand-drawn floats. It now features over 130 spectacular floats, fantasy costumes and creations representing the diverse cultural society Christchurch now heralds.

Today the Christchurch Santa Parade attracts over 110,000 people, 2,500 participants and hundreds of volunteers.

They all turn out for an hour and a half of “free” fun and entertainment.
